60th Anniversary
Monday 16 April marks the 60 anniversary of the death of Ireland's famous prima donna, Margaret Burke Sheridan.
Born in Castlebar, Co Mayo, 'discovered' by Marconi, trained by Martino, Pucinni and Toscanini, who dubbed her 'Empress of Ireland', she performed with operatic legends, such as Gigli, Pertile, Lauri Volpi, Badini, Zanelli, Autori, at La Scala, San Carlos, Rome, Turin, Cremona and many of Italy's other great opera houses, and also at Covent Garden.
